New Show Tunes Emerge in Men's Songbook Cabaret Dec. 5 at NYC's Opia

News   New Show Tunes Emerge in Men's Songbook Cabaret Dec. 5 at NYC's Opia
Broadway leading-men types embrace songs by rising theatre songwriters in a one-night cabaret evening called Under-Exposed: The Men's Songbook, Dec. 5 at Opia in Manhattan.

Part of the Live at Opia series, the new 8 PM show features songs by Adrienne Albert, Mark Barkan, Rolf Barnes, Norman Beim, Barbara Campbell, Ben Cohn, Chad Hardin, Sean McDaniel, David Nehls, Joan Ross Sorkin, Dan Schillaci, Gary Schocker, Eric Svejcar and John Wallowitch.

The performers include D.B. Bonds (Les Miserables), William Broderick, Gilles Chiasson (Rent) and Graham Rowat (The Thing About Men, Dracula).

The evening is directed and conceived by Jamibeth Margolis, with musical direction by Ben Cohn. David Leidholdt produces.

"The Songbook idea came from a previous revue that Jamibeth created while she was out of town directing a production of Jekyll and Hyde," said producer Leidholdt. "An actor in the cast approached her because he felt like that women always got the better songs, so they created a revue of songs written for men from existing material. We took that idea and decided to do it with all new material wanting to keep with the initial intent of 'Under-Exposed,' which is exposing audiences to the a new generation of musical writers."

The revue features music written for the male voice from new shows that have been presented recently as workshops and readings in New York City, productions around the area, and as part of the recent New York Musical Theatre Festival. These include Owl Creek, Far From the Madding Crowd, Two Cities and Caligula. The show also features some holiday tunes, pop tunes and cabaret songs by these "on the rise" musical theatre composers and lyricists.

Admission is $15 cover plus $15 food or drink minimum. Bring a toy for "Toys for Tots" and get $5 off the cover price.

Opia is at 103 E. 57th St. off of Lexington Ave. For information, call (212) 688-3939 or visit

Coming Dec. 12, Under-Exposed presents the music of Brian Lowdermilk and Kait Kerrigan.
