The widely acclaimed, multiple-award winning Druid and Atlantic Theater co-production of Martin McDonagh's comic drama, considered my many to be the writer's masterpiece, will travel to Chicago, Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Dublin, Roscommon and Inis Meáin (one of the Aran Islands), among other markets. Druid is based in Galway, Ireland.
First staged by Druid in September 2008 and directed by Garry Hynes, this production of The Cripple of Inishmaan toured Ireland and the U.K., and went on to attract the highest attendance ever for a production by Off-Broadway's Atlantic Theater in New York City. It subsequently won a total of nine awards; six New York theatre awards, two U.K. awards and one Irish Times Irish Theatre award including Best Production, Outstanding Director and Outstanding Ensemble.
In the play, it's 1934 and on the drab island of Inishmaan word arrives that a Hollywood film is being shot on the neighboring Inishmore. "Cripple Billy" wants his chance out to his hardscrabble life.
A recent casting notice indicates the company will be a hybrid cast of Irish and American performers, with rehearsals and launch in Ireland.
