Classic Arts News New York Magazine Picks Favorite Performances of 2005 New York magazine has unveiled its best-of lists for 2005 dance and classical music events in the city.
Categories include best opening night, awarded to the New York Philharmonic's season opener in Avery Fisher Hall. Elliott Carter was named best composer over 85. Cecilia Bartoli, Diana Damrau, and Ren_ Pape were chosen for best vocal performance, while "Watching Ligeti Move," a dance performance at Columbia's Miller Theatere, was named best night at the ballet.

Pianists Earl Wild, Pierre Laurent-Aimard, and Ivan Moravec were chosen in the best-instrumental-performance category.

Other categories selected by New York critics Peter G. Davis and Alicia Zuckerman included best freebie, best Meredith Monk tribute, and best series programming.
