Classic Arts News New York Philharmonic to Ring in New Year With Beethoven's Ninth The New York Philharmonic will celebrate New Year's Eve with a performance of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony, conducted by former music director Kurt Masur.
The evening's soloists include soprano Christine Brewer, mezzo-soprano Marietta Simpson, tenor Thomas Studebaker, and bass-baritone Albert Dohmen, who is making his New York Philharmonic deubt. The New York Choral Artists, directed by Joseph Flummerfelt, will also perform.

Brewer replaces Adrianne Pieczonka, who was originally slated to appear in her New York Philharmonic debut. Pieczonka is recovering from illness.

Masur conducted Beethoven's Ninth nine times during his tenure with the Philharmonic, including on New Year's Eve in 1999.

The concert will be broadcast live on WNYC radio in the New York area and on the Internet.
