Nicholas Hytner and Lucy Prebble at Work on New Musical Version of Carmen | Playbill

News Nicholas Hytner and Lucy Prebble at Work on New Musical Version of Carmen Nicholas Hytner, who received Tony Awards for his direction of The History Boys and the revival of Carousel, will direct a new musical version of Georges Bizet's opera Carmen.

The musical, according to London's Daily Mail, will be Hytner's first project when he steps down as the artistic director of the National Theatre next year. Playwright Lucy Prebble, whose plays include Enron and The Effect, has written the new adaptation of the opera, shifting the story's setting from Seville to Cuba.

A reading of the revised version was held last weekend.

A timeline for the production has yet to be announced, although the Daily Mail says a London bow in 2016 is expected.

Hytner's final production at the National will be Tom Stoppard's The Hard Problem, which begins performances Jan. 21, 2015.
