News Nicky Silver's The Lyons Will End Its Broadway Roar on July 1 The Lyons, Nicky Silver's dysfunctional-family comedy starring Tony Award winners Linda Lavin and Dick Latessa, will close July 1 at Broadway's Cort Theatre, the producers announced June 14. The darkly comic play, for which Lavin was nominated for a 2012 Tony as Best Actress, marked the Broadway debut of critically acclaimed downtown playwright Silver. It premiered Off-Broadway in fall 2011.

When it closes, the production will have played 21 previews and 80 regular performances.

It opened on Broadway on April 23 following previews from April 5. Lavin (Broadway Bound, The Tale of the Allergist's Wife) and Latessa (Hairspray, Damn Yankees) reunited with fellow members of the original Vineyard Theatre run, including Michael Esper (Assistance, American Idiot) and Kate Jennings Grant (Broadway's Proof, 2009's Guys and Dolls) as their messed-up adult children; Brenda Pressley (original Dreamgirls) as a nurse; and Gregory Wooddell (Lincoln Center Theater's Cymbeline) as a real estate agent. Charlie Hofheimer ("Mad Men") succeeded Esper on June 12.

Mark Brokaw (Broadway's The Constant Wife, Cry-Baby, Reckless, After Miss Julie) directed, as his did Off-Broadway.

The Broadway run is produced by Kathleen K. Johnson (Race, Hair, Blithe Spirit, Superior Donuts, A Life in the Theatre, The Best Man).

Here's how the play is billed: "The Lyons is a funny and edgy work starring Linda Lavin as Rita Lyons, the indomitable matriarch of a family at a major crossroads: her husband is dying, her son's in a dubious relationship, her daughter's struggling to stay sober and on top of it all, she can't settle on a new design for the living room." Lavin, who got love-letter reviews for playing Rita, won the Best Actress Tony Award for her work as another frayed mother — Kate in Neil Simon's Broadway Bound. (The Lyons' sole Tony nomination was for Lavin.) Latessa won the Best Supporting Actor Tony for playing Wilbur in Hairspray. Their characters in The Lyons are about to begin their next chapters, while the future is uncertain for their children.

The original design team for The Lyons returned for Broadway: scenic design by Allen Moyer; lighting design by David Lander; costume design by Michael Krass; and original music and sound design by David Van Tieghem.

Silver is known for his caustic characters in plays about broken families and warped relationships. His plays include Pterodactyls, Raised in Captivity, The Food Chain, The Eros Trilogy, Beautiful Child, The Altruists, Fit to Be Tied, Fat Men in Skirts and The Maiden's Prayer, among others. He wrote the new book for the Broadway revival of the Rodgers and Hart musical The Boys From Syracuse.

The Lyons is the fourth production by the not-for-profit Vineyard Theatre to transfer to Broadway, following the long-running, Tony Award-winning musical Avenue Q and [title of show] and The Scottsboro Boys.

The Lyons offers a rush ticket policy: priced at $26.50 each, a limited number of general rush seats will be sold for each performance, on the day of the show only, when the box office opens. Cash only. Limit two tickets per person.

Cort Theatre is at 138 W. 48 Street.
