News Nolen to Star in LBJ Musical The Winner in Texas Dean Nolen — who originated the role of Harry Bright in Broadway's Mamma Mia! — will star as Lyndon Johnson in Lyric Stage's world premiere of Lewis Flinn and Joe Sutton's musical The Winner Feb. 16-March 3 at the Irving Arts Center's Dupree Theater in Irving, TX.

The musical is about Lyndon Baines Johnson's Senate race in 1948 and is also a love story between Johnson and his wife "Lady Bird" Johnson.

Gigi Cervantes will play "Lady Bird," Joshua Doss plays John Connally and Lindsay Holloway will play Connally's wife Nellie. Gary Moody will play LBJ's opponent, former Texas Governor Coke Stephenson, and Ray Gestaut is George Parr, the political boss of Duvall County. Also starring are Ben Giddings, Stan Graner, Stephanie Hall, Rob Hood, Jonathan McCurry, Allison Rogers, Kristi Rowan Gary Taggart and Willy Welch.

The director is Peter Hackett, chairman of the department of theatre at Dartmouth College. Flinn composed the music and Sutton did the book and lyrics.

According to press notes, during the election, "with his trusted campaign manager John Connally, LBJ re-wrote the rulebook on modern politics. And through it all, Johnson's wife Lady Bird looked on with worry. And then she intervened. With love, with compassion, but more than anything, with a sense of ethics that her husband often lacked, Lady Bird fought for the man she loved — and in doing so, she delivered to her state and her country a man she could be proud of: The man who eventually became the 36th President of the United States."

Flinn designed the sound and composed original music for The Little Dog Laughed on Broadway, and has also done sound and/or original music for shows such as Show People, Privilege, Old Money, Old Money, Music From a Sparkling Planet, Mondo Drama, Complete Works of Shakespeare (abridged) and The Busy World is Hushed. Sutton's works include Voir Dire, As It is in Heaven, The Benefits of Doubt, Black Market, The Third Army, Guns 'n Ammo, Restoring the Sun, Enough is Enough and The Predator's Ball.

Lyric Stage, now in its 14th season, bills itself as "Dallas County's only locally produced professional musical theatre company."

The Irving Arts Center’s Dupree Theater is at 3333 North MacArthur Blvd. in Irving, TX. For tickets or more information visit www.lyricstage.org or call (972) 252-2787.
