The Theatre Awards UK 2012 will be presented at a lunchtime ceremony Oct. 28 at the historic Guildhall, a medieval listed landmark in the City of London, near St. Paul's Cathedral. Theatre Awards UK is the only nationwide awards scheme to honor creative excellence and the outstanding achievement seen on and off stage throughout England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
As well as some 15 awards for both performance and management achievement decided by expert panels, this year the Awards include a public vote for audiences across the U.K. to select the award for Best Touring Production from a shortlist of five productions that have visited over 45 cities and towns across the U.K.
Amongst the major nominees are David Hare and Sarah Ruhl, nominated for Best New Play for South Downs and In the Next Room, respectively (seen at Chichester Festival Theatre's Minerva Studio and Theatre Royal Bath's Ustinov Studio), Michael Ball and Imelda Staunton (nominated for Best Performance in a Musical for their roles in Chichester's Sweeney Todd, in a category that also includes Daniel Evans for starring in the Sheffield Crucible production of Company), Henry Goodman nominated for Best Actor for The Resistible Rise of Arturo Ui (Chichester Festival Theatre's Minerva) and nominations for Sweeney Todd and Company (at Chichester and Sheffield, respectively) for Best Musical Production.
