Nonesuch's "Sweeney Todd" Soundtrack Slices Up Billboard Charts

News   Nonesuch's "Sweeney Todd" Soundtrack Slices Up Billboard Charts
The Nonesuch Records release of the soundtrack to Tim Burton's "Sweeney Todd" film climbed the Billboard charts this week.

Released on Dec. 18, the album debuted on the "Top Soundtracks" chart last week at No. 8 — just behind this year's other Broadway-based movie musical, "Hairspray." The "Sweeney" recording jumped five spots to No. 3 on this week's chart. ("Hannah Montana 2" and "High School Musical 2" placed at the top.)

"Sweeney Todd" also climbed to No. 4 (from No. 7) on the "Top Digital Albums" chart and to No. 23 (from No. 56) on "The Billboard 200."

Nonesuch also saw a bump in sales for the recent new Broadway cast recording of Sweeney Todd (the revival's album notched No. 11 on "Top Cast Albums" this week after it re-entered the chart at No. 14 last week). The new Tim Burton film adaptation of the Stephen Sondheim-Hugh Wheeler musical also spurred the original Sweeney Todd cast recording (on RCA Red Seal) into the top five (at No. 5) following its debut on the same countdown last week (at No. 11).

Nonesuch issued a deluxe edition and a highlights version of the "Sweeney Todd" film soundtrack, both produced by Mike Higham. The albums were recorded in London. Longtime Sondheim collaborators, orchestrator Jonathan Tunick and music supervisor Paul Gemignani, worked on the soundtrack.

Featuring the pared-down score from the film, the soundtrack includes Johnny Depp in the title role with Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett, Alan Rickman as Judge Turpin, Timothy Spall as Beadle Bamford and Sacha Baron Cohen as Signor Adolfo Pirelli.

Rounding out the cast are Laura Michelle Kelly (Fiddler on the Roof) as the Beggar Woman, Jamie Campbell Bowen as Anthony, Jayne Wisener as Johanna and newcomer Edward Sanders as Tobias.

The tracks featured on the deluxe edition follow:

1. "Opening Title"
2. "No Place Like London"
3. "The Worst Pies in London"
4. "Poor Thing"
5. "My Friends"
6. "Green Finch & Linnett Bird"

The highlights disc excludes the "Opening Title," "Alms Alms," "Ladies and Their Sensitivities" and the "Final Scene" as well as the bonus content (including an 80 page, full-color booklet).

Nonesuch also released the cast recording for the recent revival of Sweeney Todd, featuring Tony winners Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone.
