News North Shore to Present The Wiz in Concert as Part of New Series The North Shore Music Theatre will launch a new series in September entitled "Screen to Stage."

The series, according to press notes, will provide a "unique look at popular Broadway musicals whose origins are based in some of the silver screen's most beloved films." The series at the Beverly, MA, venue will kick off with the Tony-winning musical The Wiz.

A cast (to be announced at a later date) will perform the 1975 musical in concert form backed by a full orchestra; performance dates are Sept. 5, 6 and 7. North Shore artistic director Barry Ivan will direct.

The North Shore season has also been finalized. Musicals will include The Producers (May 13-June 1), Contact (June 10-29), Bye Bye Birdie (July 15-Aug. 3), The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee (Aug. 12-31), Show Boat (Sept. 23-Oct. 12) and 42nd Street (Oct. 28-Nov. 16).

A musical version of "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," The Wiz features music and lyrics by Charlie Smalls and a book by William F. Brown. The production opened at Broadway's Majestic Theatre in January 1975 and eventually played 1,672 previews before closing in January 1979 at the Broadway Theatre. The original cast included Hinton Battle, Tiger Haynes, Stephanie Mills, Ted Ross, Dee Dee Bridgewater, André De Shields and Mabel King.
