The 1998-99 NY theatre season officially hit its half-way point this week (Nov. 30-Dec. 6), leading several awards-givers already to look towards season's end.

Earlier this week, the Village Voice OBIEs chose its judging committee, and now the Drama Desk has decided that its nominations will be announced April 26, 1999 at the Friar's Club in midtown Manhattan. As in year's past, the announcement will be broadcast live on TV's NY-1.

The Drama Desk Awards ceremony will take place May 16, 1999 at a venue to be announced. Those, too, will be broadcast live on NY-1.

The nominating committee this season consists of Drama Desk president David Sheward ("Back Stage"), Alexis Greene ("InTheater"), Barbara Siegel ("Drama-Logue"), committee chairman Frank Scheck ("The Hollywood Reporter," "Christian Science Monitor"), Sam Whitehead ("Time Out-NY"), Harry Haun ("Playbill") and Patrick Pacheco ("Playbill," "Newsday"). Sheward, Greene, Siegel, Scheck and Whitehead are returnees from the previous season.

The Drama Desk Awards recognize excellence in Broadway and Off Broadway theatre. Last year's winners included The Beauty Queen of Leenane (play), Ragtime (musical), A View From The Bridge (revival play) and Cabaret (revival musical). -- By David Lefkowitz
