David Alan Grier is not the only "In Living Color" star to make his way to the New York stage. As Grier prepares to go into Broadway's Funny Thing Happened On The Way To The Forum, Kim Coles will open tonight, June 12, in an Off-Off-Broadway mounting of Homework, a new play by Coles and Charles Randoph-Wright.

Homework tells a comic/poignant tale of three girlfriends from Brooklyn (all played by Coles): Kimmie, popular and naive; Angela, the class beauty; and Shakronda, the bright and sassy one. Similar to Vanities, Homework follows the women through college, careers and relationships, illustrating the observation that "life is a test; if you expect to pass, don't cheat."

A Shelarious Production, Homework was workshopped at the Actors' Gang Theatre in Los Angeles. Coles started her career as a stand-up comedienne, then became an ensemble member of TV's "In Living Color" and now stars as Synclaire on TV's "Living Single." Her first book, I'm Free, But It'll Cost You, will be published this month by Hyperion Books.

Also appearing in the comedy are Shaun Baker, Wolfgang Bodison, Scotch Ellis Loring and Gustavo Rex. Designing the show are Alan Baron (set) and Yael Pardess (costumes). Director Randolph-Wright also staged the downtown hit, The Diva Is Dismissedand Cabaret Verboten at Classic Stage Company.
