In Alice, the classic surreal tale of a young girl going into a fantasy world, receives a new treatment. In this adult version, physically and sexually abrasive, Alice is psychologically terrified by the denizens of this "Wonderland."

Directed and conceived by Ellen Bickerman, Alice features a cast including Josh Conklin, Elanit Dvora, Aya Ogawa, Robert Saietta, Corey Tazmania Stieb and Kurt Williams.

With The Escapist, a small cabaret deep in Albania houses the gypsy Giorgio -- a second rate burlesque performer. When he finds out a great escape artist cancels a performance, Giorgio, his wife and sister, attempt to seize the opportunity to become stars.

Soho Rep Artistic Director Daniel Aukin told Playbill On-Line (May 2), "I think that thses two groups are two of the most astonishing theatre groups working in the downtown scene today." Aukin continued, "There is very little in the way of training for many of the theater companies downtown, and when I saw work by both companies, it had the quality of real training about it. Long-term dedicated training results in quality work, which is rare. Both companies develop pieces over a long period of time, which is incredibly difficult in the scene we face. I'm proud to be working with two groups who work with such craft and rigor."

Founded in 1996, The Flying Machine is comprised of international performers trained by movement guru Jacques LeCoq, with a common mission to create and tell stories.

Last year, the company's The Utopians played in the NY Fringe Fest and extended into a gig at the Present Company's Theatorium. The Escapist features Josh Carlebach directing Richard Crawford, Colin Gee, Jessica Green, and Ganzalo Munoz.

Soho Rep, founded in 1974, has introduced hundreds of playwrights to the New York scene, including Mac Wellman, Ain Gordon, Len Jenkin, and Eric Overmeyer. Once known for presenting theatre's most innovative playwrights, the theatre's reputation began to diminish in the '90s. Kicking off his tenure with downtown's hottest property (Richard Maxwell), new artistic director Daniel Aukin hopes to bring a new Soho Rep into the 21st Century.

For tickets for either Alice's Evidence or The Escapist, playing in repertory with each other, call the Soho Rep box office at (212) 334 0962.
