News   Obie Winning Ma-Yi Theater Company Presents World Premiere of The Children of Vonderly
Off-Broadway's Obie Award-winning Ma-Yi Theater Company will present the world premiere of Lloyd Suh's The Children of Vonderly starting Sept. 22. It's the first production of the troupe's 19th season.

Production notes for Suh's work state, "There's never a dull moment in the Vonderly household. Led by a headstrong Jewish matriarch, this unconventional multi-ethnic family of adopted and disabled children band together after a crisis threatens to rip them apart. Bound by his wheelchair and burdened by family obligations, oldest brother Jerry Vonderly looks for ways to balance his mother's outlandish expectations and his own dreams of a 'normal' life outside the family's anything-but-traditional home in Indianapolis, Indiana."

Featured in the cast are William Jackson Harper, Lynn Cohen (who played Golda Meir in Steven Spielberg's Oscar-nominated film "Munich"), Jackie Chung, Graeme Gillis, Stephen Jutras, Hoon Lee, Shawn Randall, and Maureen Sebastian.

The Children of Vonderly creative team includes set design by Sarah Lambert, costume design by Maiko Matsushima, lighting design by Josh Bradford and sound design by Fabian Obispo. Ma-Yi Theater Company artistic director, Ralph B. Pena, directs.

Lloyd Suh is the author of numerous plays including American Hwangap, The Garden Variety and Masha No Home. Suh is co-director of the Ma-Yi Writer's Lab and a member of Ensemble Studio Theatre and The Actors Studio. He directed the world premiere of Michael Golamco's Cowboy V. Samurai for the National Asian American Theatre Company.

The Children of Vonderly will play a limited engagement from Sept. 22-Oct. 21, opening Oct. 4. The production will play the East 13th Street Theatre, 136 E. 13th St. in Manhattan. For tickets and information call (212) 352-3101 or visit
