Cullum starred on Broadway as Oscar Jaffe in On the 20th Century and in lead roles in Shenandoah, Urinetown, The Scottsboro Boys and other shows, and played Sir Dinadan in the original cast of Camelot. He's also known for creating the role of Holling the bartender in TV's "Northern Exposure." His most recent Broadway performance was in spring 2014 in Harvey Fierstein's Casa Valentina. He is a member of the Theatre Hall of Fame. Broadway producers The Araca Group and ATA Artistic Director James Jennings announced that the theatre will be rechristened in a ceremony on Oct. 16.
The new John Cullum Theatre was home to the original May 2001 engagement of Urinetown before it moved to Broadway that fall. In that space Cullum created his performance as the ruthless Caldwell B. Cladwell and for which he later received a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical. A revival of Urinetown is playing there now. The renaming will take place after the Oct. 16 evening's performance.
