Scott Morfee, Jean Doumanian and Tom Wirtshafter, the producers of Nina Raine's family drama Tribes, announced Nov. 30 that the acclaimed Off-Broadway play has recouped its entire investment.

Tribes began performances Feb. 16, 2012, and opened to rave reviews on March 4, 2012, at The Barrow Street Theatre (27 Barrow Street), where it will give its final performance Jan. 6, 2013.

"We are extremely pleased and honored to have brought this award-winning play to an Off-Broadway audience," the producers stated. "Upon closing Tribes will have given 19 preview and 345 regular performances, and grossed over $2.5 million. To date, it has been seen by more than 50,000 theatre patrons, including 4,000 who attended captioned and/or interpreted performances, under the auspices of TDF (Accessibility Program, TAP), and interpreted through arrangement with Hands On."

Directed by multiple Lortel and Obie Award winner David Cromer, the cast features Susannah Flood as Sylvia, Russell Harvard as Billy, Lee Roy Rogers as Beth, Jeff Still as Christopher, Dina Thomas as Ruth and Nick Westrate, winner of a 2012 Special Drama Desk Award for his versatility in the 2011-12 season, as Daniel.

In Tribes, according to production notes, "Billy was born deaf into a hearing family, and raised inside the fiercely idiosyncratic and unrepentantly politically incorrect cocoon of his parents’ house. He has adapted brilliantly to his family’s unconventional ways, but they’ve never bothered to return the favor. It’s not until he meets Sylvia, a young woman on the brink of deafness, that he finally understands what it means to be understood."

Tribes is produced Off-Broadway by Scott Morfee, Jean Doumanian, Tom Wirtshafter, Patrick Daly, 2Manocherians, Christian Chadd Taylor, Burnt Umber Productions, Roger E. Kass and Marc & Lisa Biales. Tickets for Tribes are $79.50 and can be purchased online at, on the phone at (212) 868-4444, or in person at the Barrow Street Theatre box office, which is located at 27 Barrow Street at 7th Avenue South.
