Olivier Award Nomination Prompts Another Extension of MCC's Haunting Whodunit | Playbill

News Olivier Award Nomination Prompts Another Extension of MCC's Haunting Whodunit A London award nomination has led to a week's extension for an Off-Broadway hit. MCC Theater has announced one last extension of Jennifer Haley's dark award-winning thriller The Nether, the London production of which, at the Duke of York's Theatre, earned a Olivier Award nomination March 9 as Best New Play. The Olivier Awards are London's equivalent of New York's Tony Awards.

The New York premiere of The Nether began previews Feb. 4 and was originally scheduled to run through March 15. Due to popular demand, the run was extended, first to March 22, and now through March 29, for what MCC says is the final extension.

The Nether, directed by Anne Kaufman, stars "Nurse Jackie" Emmy winner Merritt Weaver and features Ben Rosenfield ("Boardwalk Empire"), Sophia Ann Caruso ("The Sound of Music Live!"), Tony nominee Peter Friedman (Ragtime, Twelve Angry Men) and Tony Award winner Frank Wood (Side Man, Clybourne Park).

Winner of the Susan Smith Blackburn Prize, The Nether is a haunting thriller set in the future. "There is a new immersive realm for the senses online," press notes state. "A virtual playground where those who plug in are coaxed into acting out their darkest fantasies – with no consequences in the 'real' world. Or so it seems…until a young female detective begins an investigation to determine if there is a point at which thought or intention may actually constitute a crime within - and outside of - this new frontier."

The Nether received its premiere in 2013 at the Center Theatre Group in Los Angeles. A London premiere followed in 2014. The play was developed at the O'Neill Theater Center's National Playwrights Conference. For tickets, visit mcctheater.org. The Lucille Lortel Theatre is located at 121 Christopher Street.
