One Single's Experience at Significant Other, and How You Can Take Yourself Out on a Solo Date Night | Playbill

News One Single's Experience at Significant Other, and How You Can Take Yourself Out on a Solo Date Night Joshua Harmon's Significant Other takes a look at the single gay guy whose best friends are all getting married off before his eyes. So, who better to send than one of our own single staffers? Armed with a pre-show cocktail, dinner and an aisle seat, here's how you can turn a solo theatre night into an awesome date night for one!

It was a solo night at the theatre for me! One of my best girlfriends lives in Atlanta (and happens to be getting married soon — much like the characters in Significant Other), and my other go-to girl was working an event (she's in movie publicity)… So, off to the show I went — all by myself.

I mean… It's the perfect show to see alone, right? What a liberating date night — Significant Other throws the audience into the New York City singles scene, where everybody is trying to figure out exactly how to get a date and (more so) how your best friend finally found "The One." I thought it would be therapeutic to watch Gideon Glick navigate the dating world — maybe I could pick up a thing or two!

But, first — drinks.

As I sat there watching the show, I could not feel closer to the character of Jordan Berman, a single guy looking for love and hitting all of dating's pitfalls on the way: Am I going to be a bridesmaid? How many more bachelorette parties do I have to attend? How do I reply to his text message? Where do I find "The One"? Is he just not that into me? #thestrugglesarereal

Nonetheless, I made a friend during intermission…

Although heart wrenching, Significant Other is real and really puts you through it (in the best way). Plus, there are tons of singles in the audience who you can sympathize with. And, you may get lucky and score a date!

If all else fails, you get to see Lindsay Mendez…

So, if you're like me, and your regular theatre date just got hitched, you can join in on the "SOLO Special" to Significant Other, too, for $49. You may show up single, but you never know — you could meet a new (Off-) Broadway bestie.

"SOLO Special" tickets are available for performances through Aug. 16 and can be purchased at RoundaboutTheatre.org using appeal code: OTHER2.

Also in the Significant Other cast are Tony nominee Barbara Barrie (original cast of Company), John Behlmann (The 39 Steps), Sas Goldberg, Carra Patterson and Luke Smith under the direction of Trip Cullman (Punk Rock, Murder Ballad).

Performances run through Aug. 16 at the Laura Pels Theatre.

Here's more about the show: "Jordan Berman would love to be in love, but that's easier said than done. So until he meets Mr. Right, he wards off lonely nights with his trio of close-knit girlfriends. But as singles' nights turn into bachelorette parties, Jordan finds that supporting the ones you love can be just as impossible as finding love itself."

The Laura Pels Theatre in the Harold and Miriam Steinberg Center for Theatre is located at 111 West 46th Street. Tickets are available by visiting RoundaboutTheatre.org or by calling (212) 719-1300.
