News O'Neill Conference Stages Carthage; Free MFA Playwrighting Panel Offered, Too The Eugene O'Neill Playwrights Conference presentation of Emily Schwend's Carthage plays the Waterford, CT, venue July 23-24.

Davis McCallum directs a cast that features Craig Bockhorn, Christian Conn, Emily Donaho, Jessica Love and Matt Rauch.

Press notes for Carthage read: "Complications arise and family secrets emerge when Hal returns to Carthage, Missouri, for the first time in six years to help his brother transition from state institution to regular life. Bryan, however, isn't about to make the process quick and painless, forcing his brother to confront the deep-rooted issues that have kept them apart and brought them together throughout their lives."

The O'Neill Center is also presenting a free playwrighting panel for MFA students, hosted by Conference artistic director Wendy Goldberg, which features Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Paula Vogel (How I Learned to Drive, A Civil War Christmas, The Mineola Twins), Elizabeth Frankel (Public Theater literary associate), Marc Masterson (Actors Theatre of Louisville artistic director), Edward Sobel (Steppenwolf Theatre Company's director of new play development) and Jack Tantleff (Paradigm Literary and Talent Agency).

The event, which concludes July 25, allows MFA playwrighting students the opportunity to attend the O'Neill readings and offers a panel of established theatre-makers who will discuss opportunities for graduating writers, the function of literary offices and the inner workings of new play development and production.

Programs at the Center include the Puppetry Conference, Playwrights Conference, Critics Institute, Music Theater Conference and the National Theater Institute. The Monte Cristo Cottage, O'Neill's childhood home, is also owned and operated by the group.
