Classic Arts News Opera Columbus to Move Onto Ohio University Campus Opera Columbus will move its productions to the Mershon Auditorium on the campus of Ohio State University starting with the 2005-06 season, the company announced this week.
The move, which coincides with Opera Columbus's 25th anniversary season, will provide the company with access to more wing space, allowing more flexibility in renting sets, and a bigger orchestra pit, with the capacity for the larger ensembles called for in 19th-century opera scores. The Mershon also boasts a 1957 pipe organ.

"Opera Columbus is moving to a venue that is, hands down, the best place for opera in Central Ohio," general director Philip Dobard said in a statement. "As a result, Columbus audiences will experience opera on a grander scale than has been possible."

Opera Columbus currently performs in the Southern Theatre, a 19th-century theater and one-time movie house that was renovated and reopened in 1998.
