The world-famous talk show host announced that dream on the red carpet prior to the June 11 Tony Awards. Winfrey told NY1 News reporters Roma Torre and Donna Karger that Broadway has been a dream of hers for years. When she went to watch friend Julia Roberts perform in Three Days of Rain, Winfrey said she thought, "I could do that."

Scheduling a Broadway run might be difficult for Winfrey, who films her top-rated talk show in a Chicago television studio. However, "The Oprah Winfrey Show" does take a yearly hiatus, so a summer Broadway run might be possible.

Winfrey also took part in the 2006 Tony Awards, introducing the musical segments from The Color Purple. She also had the chance to reprise Sophia's famous line from the film of the Alice Walker novel, "You told Harpo to beat me."
