Image Entertainment distributes the DVD re-release and the new Blu-ray release. New artwork has also been created for the release, which coincides with the Dec. 25 theatrical arrival of Disney's film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical.
Into the Woods premiered on Broadway in 1987 at the Martin Beck Theatre (now the Hirschfeld) starring Peters, Zien, Gleason, Kim Crosby and Robert Westenberg. The original cast performance was preserved by PBS' American Playhouse in 1991.

Into the Woods features a Tony-winning score by Stephen Sondheim and Tony-winning book by James Lapine, who also staged the original Broadway production and a subsequent 2003 revival. Both Lapine and Sondheim collaborated on the upcoming Disney film.
