His safety and comfort are challenged when a past crime comes to light and threatens his status as the "ideal husband." Social intruder Mrs. Cheveley stirs this and other troubles for Sir Robert and his wife, as well as for Lord Goring, the bachelor with whom she has a romantic history. Sir Robert turns to his friend Lord Goring, who takes matters into his own hands and attempts to solve the problems."
