The Outer Critics Circle Awards ceremony will be held May 23 at 4 PM at the famed Sardi's Restaurant in New York City.
As of press time, the Sardi's event will feature such celebrities as gossip columnist and theatre lover Liz Smith, who will present Elaine Stritch with her award for Outstanding Solo Performance; The Producers' Cady Huffman, who will give awards to John Lithgow and Susan Stroman for, respectively, Outstanding Actor in a Musical and Outstanding Choreography; Brad Oscar, who will present Oklahoma!'s Shuler Hensley with his award for Outstanding Featured Actor in a Musical; and Laurence Luckinbill, who will present Topdog/Underdog playwright Suzan-Lori Parks with the John Gassner Award).
An organization of over 75 out-of-town critics and writers, the Outer Critics Circle officially announced the winners of the 2002 awards on April 28. Topping the roster was Trevor Nunn's revival of Oklahoma!, which nabbed five awards.
The musical, Urinetown, won three awards, including Outstanding Broadway Musical while Edward Albee's The Goat won Outstanding Broadway Play. Oklahoma! was dubbed Outstanding Revival of a Musical (also taking Supporting Actor, Choreography, Lighting and Set honors), and Morning's at Seven won for Outstanding Revival of a Play. Fortune's Fool's pair of choice actors, Alan Bates and Frank Langella, took the prizes for Outstanding Actor and Supporting Actor, respectively, in a play. The Dazzle and tick, tick...BOOM! were named Outstanding Off-Broadway Play and Musical, respectively. Sutton Foster (in her first lead Broadway role) won Outstanding Actress in a Musical for the title role in Thoroughly Modern Millie and John Lithgow took Outstanding Actor in a Musical for playing wicked JJ Hunsecker in Sweet Smell of Success.
The Outer Critics Circle cited Topdog/Underdog's Mos Def and Jeffrey Wright for a Special Achievement award for their performances in the Pulitzer Prize-winning play. Based on a single public performance in New York (and an invited dress rehearsal), Into the Woods managed to sneak under the wire and collect four nominations (Musical Revival, Director of a Musical, Actress and Featured Actress in a Musical), but won none. Outer Critics Circle Awards honor both Broadway and Off-Broadway productions, with shows that opened Off-Broadway during the 2001-2002 season and then transferred to Broadway — such as Topdog, Metamorphoses, and Urinetown — being included in the Broadway categorization.
