Directed by Darko Tresnjak (A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder), Ghosts of Versailles (Feb. 7-March 1, 2015) is the first opera presented in L.A. opera's Figaro Trilogy, which also includes Rossini's The Barber of Seville (Feb. 28-March 22) and Mozart's The Marriage of Figaro (March 21-April 12).
LuPone will play Turkish entertainer Samira with Racette as Marie Anoinette. L.A. opera musical director James Conlon will conduct the performances at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion.
Here's how the English-language opera is billed: "Trapped in the spirit world, the ghost of Marie Antoinette bitterly reflects on her final suffering. Her favorite playwright Beaumarchais tries to entertain the melancholy queen with the continuing adventures of Figaro, Rosina and Count Almaviva—the beloved characters from The Barber of Seville and The Marriage of Figaro. But sneaky Figaro refuses to play by the script, breaking free from the opera-within-the-opera in a surprise bid for a better life."
The performances, which are part of a two-month "Figaro Unbound" celebration, mark the West Coast premiere of Corigliano's 1991 opera.
