The 1998 Barrymore Awards for excellence in Philadelphia Theatre will be presented Oct. 19 at the Walnut Street Theatre.

Nominees will be announced at an early September press conference, according to a spokesperson from Theatre Alliance of Greater Philadelphia, which runs the event.

This fourth-annual awards ceremony is presented by First Union. Over 20 awards will be given, including three special awards: the F. Otto Haas Award for Emerging Theatre Artist, the First Union Award for Outstanding Community Service, and the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News Award for Excellence in Theatre Education. Tickets also include entrance to the After Party to be held at the Curtis Center. The gala will feature the Absolut Barrymore Cocktail Competition, citrus-flavored cooking from Philadelphia restraurants and caterers, and the Cuban/Latin music of Charanga La Unica. Last year's big winner was the Wilma Theatre, taking top honors for Avenue X (musical) and Quills (play). The two previous years were lucky for Terrence McNally , first with Master Class, then with Love! Valour! Compassion!. -- By David Lefkowitz
