Shubert Organization Chairman Gerald Schoenfeld and New York City Department of Education chancellor Joel Klein were recently presented with the first Schoenfeld Vision for Arts in Education Award.

The Broadway League presented the awards at an Oct. 6 benefit at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. Broadway stars Betty Buckley, Carolee Carmello, Marin Mazzie, Donna Murphy, Leslie Uggams and surprise guest Whoopi Goldberg performed a musical tribute for the honorees along with students from New York City public schools.

Charlotte St. Martin, Broadway League executive director, said in a release, "The Schoenfeld Vision for Arts in Education Award evolved as a tribute to recognize Jerry for his and the Shubert Organization's involvement in arts education programs. We're thrilled to recognize and celebrate Joel Klein's contributions towards enhancing arts-related programming in our city's schools. Presenting the awards at The Broadway League's first gala benefit is an exciting way to highlight our commitment to educational initiatives."
