Howard Brenton's new adaptation of Georg Büchner's Danton's Death, running at London's National Theatre, opened July 22.

Danton's Death, directed by Michael Grandage and starring Toby Stephens, features the talents of David Beames, Max Bennett, Stefano Braschi, Kirsty Bushell, Jason Cheater, Judith Coke, Emmanuella Cole, Ilan Goodman, Taylor James, Michael Jenn, Phillip Joseph, Banaby Kay, Gwilym Lee, Elliot Levey, Eleanor Matsuura, Elizabeth Nestor, Alec Newman, Chu Omambala, Rebecca O'Mara, Rebecca Scroggs, David Smith, Jonathan Warde and Ashley Zhangazha.

Danton's Death is described this way by the National: "After a series of bloody purges the life-loving, volatile Danton is tormented by his part in the killing. His political rival, the driven, ascetic Robespierre, decides Danton's fate. A titanic struggle begins. Once friends who wanted to change the world, now one stands for compromise the other for ideological purity as the guillotine awaits."
