News PHOTO CALL: First Look at the Les Misérables Film Poster Universal has pushed back the release date for the film adaptation of the Tony Award-winning musical Les Misérables, the production company confirmed to Playbill.com. The film will now have a Christmas Day opening, hitting theatres in a wide release Dec. 25.

With the Warner Bros. movie "The Great Gatsby" moved back to summer 2013 and Fox's "The Life of Pi" moved up to Nov. 21 — films originally scheduled for Christmas Day — Universal has taken the Dec. 25 slot for "Les Misérables." The film was previously scheduled to open Dec. 14.

Here is a first look at the movie's main poster art, featuring "Young Cosette" actress Isabelle Allen:

The movie poster is a riff on the stage musical's iconic illustration, which used Emile Bayard's historical illustrations from the Victor Hugo source material:

As previously reported, the principal cast of the film directed by Academy Award winner Tim Hooper ("The King's Speech," "John Adams") includes Hugh Jackman as Jean Valjean; Russell Crowe as Javert; Oscar nominee Anne Hathaway as Fantine; Helena Bonham Carter as Madame Thenardier; Amanda Seyfried as Cosette; Eddie Redmayne as Marius; Samantha Barks as Eponine; Aaron Tveit as Enjolras; and George Blagden as student Grantaire. Original stage Valjean, Colm Wilkinson, plays the pivotal role of the Bishop of Digne in the picture. Tony Award winner Frances Ruffelle, the original Eponine in London and on Broadway, also makes an appearance in the film.

Les Misérables producer Cameron Mackintosh previously confirmed that the film version of the epic Victor Hugo-inspired musical, with songs by Alain Boublil, Claude-Michel Schonberg and Herbert Kretzmer, features a new song for hero Jean Valjean, and vocals for the film were sung live rather than dubbed. Read more about it here.

William Nicholson ("Gladiator," "Nell," "Shadowlands") penned the screenplay.

Production for "Les Miz" began in early March. Check out photos from filming.
