Lewis takes on the mammoth assignment of Mama Rose, widely considered to be among the greatest female roles in the musical theatre canon. The singing actress - perhaps best known for her performance as Beth on the NBC sitcom "Newsradio" - was last seen on Broadway as Velma Kelly in Chicago. Lewis played Gloria in the 1994 revival of Damn Yankees and recently appeared on the California stage as Trina in the all-star benefit concert of Falsettos staged this past fall at Los Angeles' Wilshire Theatre.

Rounding out the central Gypsy "family" are Paul Binotto (Dreamgirls, Starlight Express) as Herbie, Alexis Carra (Sweet Charity, The Pirate Queen) as Louise and Kelly D. Felthous (Kathy in North Shore's Singin' in the Rain) as June.

Also featured are Leslie Becker (Nine revival) as Tessie Tura/Miss Cratchitt, Pia C. Glenn (The Frogs) as Mazeppa, Mia Price (Oklahoma) as Electra, Josh Walden (La Cage aux Folles, A Chorus Line) as Tulsa, Heather McDonald as Baby June and Julia Adams as Baby Louise.

Comprising the ensemble are J.B. Adams, Ayesha Ayeni, Miki Berg, Shelby Braxton-Brooks, Ann Cooley, Shiloh Goodin, Robert Hartwell, Tim Hausmann, Garrett Hawe, Rodger Hoopman, Regan Kays, Matthew J. Kilgore, Matthew Simpkins, Mahri Relin and Nikki Tomlinson.

Marcia Milgrom Dodge stages the work, with choreography by Bob Richard and musical direction by Michael Rice. Gypsy will run for eight performances at downtown Sacramento's Wells Fargo Pavilion.

The jam-packed summer season will continue with productions of Sweeney Todd (July 22-27), Swing! (July 29-Aug. 3), My Fair Lady (Aug. 5-10), Evita (Aug. 12-17) and Hairspray (Aug. 19-28).
