Shirl Bernheim, who plays Valerie Harper's prickly mother in The Tale of the Allergist's Wife, was surprised by her castmates (including Tony Roberts, Michele Lee and Harper) with a birthday cake Sept. 21. Bernheim, a veteran of many American regional theatres and the Broadway production of Grease, turned 80.
