News PHOTO CALL: John Malkovich Discusses U.S. Premiere of Giacomo Variations The Cherry Orchard Festival Foundation kicks off its inaugural International Arts Festival in New York City May 30 with the U.S. premiere of The Giacomo Variations, starring Academy Award nominee and Emmy winner John Malkovich. He led a discussion of the piece the morning of May 29.

The Festival's mission is to "introduce and promote global cultural activity and exchange of ideas, aiming to enlighten and engage audiences through performing and visual arts, educational programs and events."

John Malkovich Discusses U.S. Premiere of Giacomo Variations


The Giacomo Variations, directed by Michael Sturminger, stars Malkovich as master scoundrel and seducer Giacomo Casanova. Four performances are offered at New York City Center May 30-31 and June 1-2. Following the 3 PM matinee on June 2, there will be a meet-the-artist VIP reception on the Grand Tier.

Following Giacomo Variations will be the U.S. premiere of Israel's Gesher Theatre production of Enemies, A Love Story June 6-9 at Jazz at Lincoln Center's Frederick P. Rose Hall. The play, according to press notes, "is based on a novel by Nobel Prize-winning author (and long-time New Yorker) Isaac Bashevis Singer, who died in 1991. The performances will be dedicated in honor of the 65th anniversary of the State of Israel."

Enemies, A Love Story, which will be performed in Hebrew with individual English and Russian in-ear translation, will have its opening-night performance June 6 at 8 PM with the VIP reception prior to the show. A 20 percent student discount, with a valid student ID, will be available at the box office. Recognized as one of her generation's great pianists and the Russian Gold Medal winner of the 2001 Van Cliburn International Piano competition, Olga Kern will return to New York City with a solo recital of works by Beethoven, Schumann and Rachmaninov June 7 at 8 PM at Alice Tully Hall at Lincoln Center. Kern will perform Beethoven, Variations on a Salieri theme, Schumann, "Carnaval," Rachmaninov, 5 Preludes Op. 32 and his Piano Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 36.
