News PHOTO CALL: Opening of Summer Shorts Fest, with New Works by Neil LaBute and Alan Zweibel The world premiere of Tony Award-nominated playwright Neil LaBute's Romance, along with other works, was staged as part of the fourth annual Summer Shorts Festival, which officially opened Aug. 7 at 59E59 Theaters Off-Broadway.

Presented through Sept. 2, Summer Shorts offers eight world-premiere, one-act plays in repertory on two separate evenings. Series A includes The Expenses Of Rain by Deb Margolin (directed by Laura Barnett) with Iyaba Ibo Mandingo and Jo Yang; An Actor Prepares by Timothy Mason (directed by Maxwell Williams) and featuring James Leighton and Mark Elliot Wilson; Play With The Penguin by Roger Hedden (directed by Billy Hopkins) with cast members Allison Daugherty, Josh Helman and Alex Manette; and Neil LaBute's Romance (directed by Dolores Rice) with cast members Jeffery M. Binder and Demond Green.

Series B includes Wendy Kesselman's The Graduation of Grace (directed by Stephanie Berry) with Clara Hopkins Daniels; Alan Zweibel's Happy (directed by Fred Berner) with Scott Adsit and Arthur French; Neil Koenigsberg's Fit (directed by Merri Milwe) with José Joaquin Perez, Kate Cullen Roberts and Liam Torres; and Jonathan's Blaze by Christopher Stetson Boal (directed by Alexander Dinelaris) with cast members J.J. Kandel and P.J. Sosko.
