News PHOTO CALL: Village Voice Obie Awards Celebrate the Best of Off-Broadway As the Tony Awards ceremony draws ever closer the Village Voice Obie Awards – what some would consider the most prestigious honor for non-Broadway theatre – were handed out on May 15.

Began in 1956 by Jerry Tallmer, the Obie Awards have “gone on to both symbolize and honor a way of life in the theatrical community known as Off-Broadway” and “are an institution of encouragement and an acknowledgment of talent,” according the Village Voice website.
