Classic Arts News Photo Journal: Rom_o et Juliette at the Met The Metropolitan Opera premiered its new production of Gounod's Rom_o et Juliette on November 14.
The opening-night cast included soprano Maureen O'Flynn, filling in on short notice for an ailing Natalie Dessay, as Juliette and tenor Ram‹n Vargas as Rom_o. Baritone St_phane Degout was Mercutio; mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato was St_phano; and Kristinn Sigmundsson was Frre Laurent.

Guy Joosten is the director; the production team includes set designer Johannes Leiacker, costume designer Jorge Jara, lighting designer David Cunningham, and choreographer Sean Curran. Bertrand de Billy is the conductor.

Performances resume tomorrow, with Dessay back in the cast, and run through December 1 and February 21-March 9, 2006.
