News PHOTO RECALL: The British Invasion Begins Anew In a scene reminiscent of the 1980’s—when powerhouses Les Miserables and The Phantom of the Opera took London by storm and then swiftly conquered Broadway—two new musicals grand in scale seem poised to follow suit after basking in glowing reviews following their openings in the West End.

Highly anticipated could be an understatement when it concerns the live stage adaptations of Billy Elliot and Mary Poppins. Elton John, Lee Hall and Stephen Daldry’s Billy Elliot is the touching and often hilarious story of a boy who yearns to dance, while Disney’s Mary Poppins uses all the tricks of the trade to bring the classic tale of a magical nanny to life on stage. The latter has been announced for a Broadway transfer, while the former has not yet announced any formal plans
