Director John Doyle boldly made a name for himself at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre on Nov. 3. As if casting Michael Cerveris and Patti LuPone as Sweeney and Mrs. Lovett weren’t enough to draw in audiences, Doyle cut the company size in half and completely eliminated any orchestra, choosing instead to give each actor an instrument and have them play the score on stage and in character.
