Classic Arts News Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre Expands Company to 29 Dancers, Extends Director's Contract In a welcome sign of health in an all-too-precarious dance world, the Pittsburgh Ballet Theatre is expanding its roster from 25 to 30 dancers for the 2006-07 season.
Ten new dancers have been engaged (including replacements for those who moved on this year); six current members are being promoted, including Kumiko Tsuji (to soloist), Christopher Rendall-Jackson and Daisuke Takeuchi (to principal dancers). Among the new arrivals are two married couples: Christopher Budzynski and Alexandra Kochis (both from the Boston Ballet) and Nurlan Abourgaliev and Aygul Abourgalieva (formerly of Indianapolis's Ballet Internationale and the Colorado Ballet, respectively); also joining the company are Christine Schwaner and Waldir Alexandre Silva, both of whom previously danced with Utah Regional Ballet and SESI Minas in Belo Horizonte, Brazil.

PBT has also extended the contract of its artistic director, Terrence Orr, for an additional three years, through the 2008-09 season. Orr is married to PBT ballet mistress Marianna Tcherkassky, once a celebrated principal dancer with American Ballet Theatre.
