News Pittsburgh CLO Season Will Feature Shrek, Matilda and More Pittsburgh CLO has announced its 2016 season, including six musicals that will all be presented at Pittsburgh's Benedum Center.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the season opens June 7-12, 2016, with the national tour of Matilda the Musical. The musical features music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and a book by Dennis Kelly. Matilda the Musical is described as such: "Matilda is the story of an extraordinary little girl who decides that despite a bad beginning filled with rotten parents, a terrifying school and a vicious head mistress, her story is going to be an astonishing one." Matthew Warchus directs.

Next will be Chicago, which will run June 17-26. The musical features a book by Bob Fosse and Fred Ebb, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb. Chicago concerns "Roxie Hart, [who] murders her unfaithful lover and finds herself competing with fellow jailed murderess Velma Kelly for the best lawyer — and best vaudeville bookings — in 1920s Chicago."

Following will be the Broadway classic Damn Yankees, which will run July 5-10. The musical features music and lyrics by Jerry Ross and Richard Adler and a book by George Abbott and Douglass Wallop. "A middle-aged man sells his soul to the devil to become a crackerjack baseball player who can help his beloved Washington Senators beat the Yankees in the World Series," according to press notes. "But despite the devil's best attempts — including the sexy Lola — to keep him under his sway, the man wants to return to his wife."

Shrek the Musical will play the Pittsburgh venue July 15-24. The musical, based on the DreamWorks film of the same name, features a book and lyrics by David Lindsay-Abaire and music by Jeanine Tesori. Shrek the Musical is described as such: "A benign green ogre and his sidekick Donkey save the land from an evil lord and rescue a lovely princess from a terrible fate."

Following will be the Disney musical Aida, which will run July 26-31. The musical, featuring music by Elton John, lyrics by Tim Rice and a book by David Henry Hwang, Linda Woolverton and Robert Falls, is described as such: "This Elton John-Tim Rice pop opera, inspired by Verdi's classic opera, tells the story of enslaved Nubian princess Aida, who falls for captain of the guard Radames, who is betrothed to the Egyptian princess who is Aida's mistress."

Closing the season will be South Pacific Aug. 5-14. The musical features music by Richard Rodgers, lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein II and a book by Joshua Logan and Hammerstein II. South Pacific, according to press notes, "follows the lives of U.S. military men, nurses and residents of a Polynesian island during World War II, based on James Michener's 'Tales of the South Pacific' and featuring a score by Rodgers and Hammerstein."
