News Pittsburgh Public's 1776, With George Merrick, Steve Vinovich, Trista Moldovan, Keith Hines, Opens Feb. 1 Pittsburgh Public Theater's production of the Tony Award-winning musical 1776, the biggest production in the company's history, opens Feb. 1, following previews that began Jan. 24, at the Public's O'Reilly Theater.

Directed by Ted Pappas, the production, which is part of the Public's "Made in America" season, continues through Feb. 24 in the heart of Downtown's Cultural District.

The cast includes George Merrick (South Pacific) as John Adams, Keith Hines (Camelot at Pittsburgh Public Theater) as Thomas Jefferson, Steve Vinovich (Lost in Yonkers) as Benjamin Franklin, Trista Moldovan (Phantom of the Opera) as Abigail Adams and Hayden Tee (Camelot at Pittsburgh Public Theater) as Edward Rutledge.

The Tony-winning Best Musical, featuring a book by Peter Stone with music and lyrics by Sherman Edwards, "tells the story of how we went from 13 colonies to the United States of America," according to PPT. "With a cast of 26 plus orchestra, 1776 presents the heroes of the American Revolution like you've never seen them before — in rousing songs and dances, comic encounters, and impassioned politics."

Rounding out the company are John Allen Biles, Paul Binotto, Jeffrey Carpenter, Jeremy Czarniak, Jarrod DiGiorgi, Joseph Domencic, Darren Eliker, James FitzGerald, Justin Fortunato, Robert Frankenberry, Tim Hartman, Daniel Krell, Jason McCune, Eric Meyers, Larry John Meyers, Scott P. Sambuco, John Scherer, Libby Servais, Gordon Stanley, Louis S. Valenzi and Stephen Wilde.

Other members of the creative team include musical director F. Wade Russo, orchestrator Dan DeLange, scenic designer James Noone, costume designer Martha Bromelmeier, lighting designer Kirk Bookman, sound designer Zach Moore, dialect coach Don Wadsworth, production stage manager Ruth E. Kramer and assistant stage manager Fredric H. Orner. All plays in The Public's 2012-13 "Made in America" season are by American writers and set in cities across the United States. In addition, their themes illuminate the issues of the day, from money and class, to race and real estate, to equality and individual responsibility.
