Crimes of the Heart opened on Broadway at the John Golden Theatre Nov. 4, 1981. Mia Dillon played the role of Babe Bortrelle, a performance that earned her a 1981 Tony nomination. The play received four Tony nominations and also won the 1981 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
A musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion, the classic musical My Fair Lady opened on Broadway March 15, 1956. Julie Andrews received a Tony nomination for Best Actress for her performance as Eliza Doolittle (her co-star Rex Harrison won the Tony), and the production was named Best Musical.
Cabaret opened on Broadway in 1966 at the Broadhurst Theatre and won eight 1967 Tony Awards, including Best Musical. The role of Sally Bowles was orginated by Jill Haworth. Liza Minnelli won an Oscar for Best Actress for her performance as Bowles in the 1972 film adaptation. A revival of the musical is currently playing Broadway's Studio 54 starring Alan Cumming and Michelle Williams.
William Shakespeare's Much Ado About Nothing is currently playing the Delacorte Theater starring "American Horror Story" actress Lily Rabe as Beatrice. The Public Theater's Shakespeare in the Park production opened June 16 and will play through July 6. The cast also includes Tony winner Brian Stokes Mitchell and Hamish Linklater.
Chicago opened in 1977 starring Broadway legends Chita Rivera and Gwen Verdon in the roles of, respectively, Velma Kelly and Roxie Hart. Bebe Neuwirth originated the role of Velma in the 1996 revival, earning her the 1997 Tony Award for Best Actress. The original Broadway production was nominated for 11 Tony Awards; the revival continues at the Ambassador Theatre.
The role of Sandy Dumbrowski was originated by Carole Demas when Grease premiered on Broadway in 1972. Tony nominee Laura Osnes played the role in the most recent Broadway revival. Taylor Louderman, of Bring It On, is currently starring as Sandy in the Paper Mill Playhouse production, which runs through June 29.
Tracy Letts' August: Osage County opened on Broadway in 2007, winning five 2008 Tony Awards, including Best Play. Sally Murphy played the role of Ivy Weston on Broadway, while Julianne Nicholson tackled the role in the 2013 film adaptation. The play was also awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
The role of Elphaba's wheelchair-using younger sister Nessarose in the international smash hit Wicked was originated on Broadway by Michelle Federer. The musical, which celebrated its 10th anniversary, continues at the Gershwin Theatre.
