Whoopi Goldberg made headlines when she was chosen to replace Nathan Lane in the Broadway revival of A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum. Her contract with the show is currently scheduled to end June 29.

Now that Forum has dispensed with the prohibitions and limitations of race and gender, Playbill On-Line would like to hear readers' ideas on who might be the next Pseudolus. Please respond to [email protected]. Make sure to explain your choice, even with just a sentence or two; if you simply send a name or list of names we won't be able to post it.

Here are the results so far. Playbill On-Line thanks those who took the time to write:

From DEver80:
Although his commitments to Seinfeld probably automatically exclude him, I think that Jason Alexander would be great in "Forum". His voice is good and his sometimes crazy comedy would be perfect. Who knows, maybe they could even write it in to "Seinfeld," no I don't think so.

  From miltondemel:
Two suggestions: How about Martin Short? He has a great ability to improvise, great comedic timing, a nice singing voice.. and he is charming!
And why not Carol Burnett? She is the best clown around and would probably bring in another kind of audience to the show.

From Jay Clark ([email protected]) Boston, MA:
I can see Michael Richards, SEINFELD's, "Kramer" rolling them in the aisles as Pseudolus, particularly in the scenes with the courtesans. I can just imagine his doubletakes and twisted reactions to the shapely assortment of beauties. He's also got a lovable quality about him that would allow the audience to sympathize and root for his need to be "Free" as the song from the show relates.
Unfortunately, by the time Whoopi departs, Richards will only have a couple of months of freedom himself before SEINFELD begins tapings once again for the fall television season. Perhaps if FORUM tours after SEINFELD wraps next season Richards can be persuaded. On the same subject, if the role of Hysterium opens up I see another Michael, as in Jeter, equally making the audiences double over with laughter. I personally think it's time for Mr. Jeter to return to the Broadway stage. His comic timing and physical agility (as proven in GRAND HOTEL) would prove fruitful to FORUM.

From pgaik:
Bette Midler -- Would certainly be able to bring the burlesque feeling to the role, and wouldn't it just be great to see her on stage in a legit show?

From Charlie:
I am writing in response to the New Pseudelous. First off let be begin by saying that I saw Nathan Lane's performance, and Whoopi's. I think that Nathan did a superb job. and Whoopi did too, but not as well as Nathan. I think if we are going for a crowd, Rosie O'Donnell would be another good Pseud. She is funny, famous, and semi-talented. Her name is a big crowd appeal too.

From Joe M.:
I realize that it might be a long shot but I think that Steve Martin would be a great choice.

From MadiganB:
I must nominate Jason Alexander. He has great comic skills and we know he can sing.
