Uys, who previously performed Elections and Erections in London, brings the politically-themed work to America to coincide with the upcoming U.S. presidential elections and the South African General Election in April of 2009. The production is co-presented by LaMaMa and Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS.
Press notes for Elections and Erections state, "It is his latest, most outrageous attack on political outrage, which underlines the 'mock' in democracy." In addition to his character Evita, Uys brings with him "special guests" including Nelson and Winnie Mandela, and Desmond Tutu.
Uys and his alter ego Evita Bezuidenhout have appeared on the London stage in Adapt or Dye, Foreign Aids and Evita for President! Uys earned a 2004 Obie for staging Foreign Aids at LaMaMa.
Cape Town, South African native, Uys has written and performed 20 plays and over 30 revues and one-man shows throughout South Africa and abroad. Paradise is Closing Down, Panorama, God's Forgotten, Faces in the Wall and Just Like Home have been performed internationally, and his one-man shows Adapt or Dye, One Man One Volt, You ANC Nothing Yet, Truth Omissions, Live from Boerassic Park, Dekaffirnated and Foreign Aids have been presented in the UK, Denmark, Germany, Holland, USA and Canada.
