News Previously Canceled Production of Rent Will Play Original Dates This Spring at Trumbull High The previously canceled production of Rent: School Edition that was to take place this spring at Trumbull High School in Trumbull, CT — approximately 66 miles from where the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical by Jonathan Larson premiered on Broadway — will play March 27-30, 2014, at the high school, according to a post on the show's Facebook page.

As previously reported, the Trumbull High administration, under first-year principal Marc Guarino, informed the school's Thespian Society that they would not be able to produce Rent: School Edition — a musical that covers topics such as homosexuality, drug use and the AIDS epidemic — which was planned for a spring run at Trumbull.

The students at Trumbull took immediate action to try and reinstate the production into the high school calendar by creating a Facebook page (which now has over 7,000 "likes"), talking to national press and submitting materials — in support of the production — to the school's board of education.

Read the Playbill.com interview with Trumbull senior Larissa Mark, who spearheaded the call to action.

Following the massive outpouring of support, the Tony Award-winning Goodspeed Musicals reached out Dec. 9 to the students at Trumbull to offer the Goodspeed Opera House for their production of Rent. After Goodspeed's action, an announcement was made that the production would go on, but at later dates that conflicted with many of the students' extracurricular activities and advanced placement exams.

The students continued to rally support from the community to have the production take place in its original timeslot.   On Dec. 16, the Trumbull for Rent Facebook page posted the below message:

Trumbull For RENT -

I am ecstatic to share with you that the Trumbull High Thespian Troupe will be putting on a production of RENT: School Edition from March 27th-30th!

Thank you all for your support, kindness and generosity through this entire process. It has been an uncertain journey these past three weeks, but the results have been worth all the effort. Throughout this entire process, we have spread messages of love and acceptance throughout the country and around the world. We will continue to impart the themes of RENT throughout our rehearsals and production this March.

We are thankful for everyone who has helped to spread our story and cause. The Thespian Society at Trumbull High has felt this entire community come together for the common goal of spreading Jonathan Larson's beautiful words, and together we have made an impact on our society.
