Former New York Times scribe Frank Rich will discuss his decade-long career at that paper. He'll converse with producer and theatre owner Rocco Landesman who, no doubt, will have choice questions for the reviewer. A collection of Rich's theatre criticism, " Hot Seat," was recently published by Random House. Rich served as the Times' chief critic from 1980 to 1993.

The sparks fly Oct. 25 at 7:30 PM. Tickets are $18.

Playwrights Arthur Miller, David Mamet and Athol Fugard; and actors Ossie David, Ruby Dee, Frank Langella and Christopher Walken will also make the walk uptown to Manhattan's 92nd Street Y this fall as part of the venue's multi-tiered "New York Theatre: On Stage and Behind the Scenes" series.

South African playwright Athol Fugard (Valley Song) will appear on Nov. 23 to kick off the dramatist oriented "In Their Own Words" program. Fugard's most recent work, The Captain's Tiger, is slated for Manhattan Theatre Club's current season. Fugard created a furor earlier this year when he withdrew Tiger from MTC's line-up in protest of the theatre's retreat from Terrence McNally's controversial new play, Corpus Christi. Fugard later reinstated his play when MTC reversed its decision. Corpus Christi opened Oct. 13 to poor reviews but sold-out houses.

Fugard will read, though it is not known from which work. The evening begins at 8 PM.

David Mamet will follow with a reading on Dec. 7 at 8 PM; and Miller will appear on Jan. 4 at 8 PM. Both will read from their plays. For tickets ($12; $15 for Miller), call (212) 996-1100.

Actors will populate the "Great Moments on Stage" series, beginning on Nov. 9, when playwright Tony Kushner (Angels in America) will moderate a discussion between translator Joel Agee and illustrator Maurice Sendak concerning their new illustrated edition of Heinrich von Kliest's classic German verse drama, Penthesilea. The talk will take place on Nov. 9 at 6 PM, and will be followed by a reading of the translation by Christopher Walken and Kathryn Walker. Tickets for the discussion are $12; for the reading, $15.

Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee will collaborate with jazz great Max Roach on "Theater Pieces," a hybrid of music and drama. The evening will take place on Dec. 16 at 8 PM. Tickets are $30.

On Dec. 21, Jonathan Miller will direct a staged reading of Robert Lowell's Benito Cereno, starring Roscoe Lee Browne (Two Trains Running) and Frank Langella (Present Laughter). Miller first directed the play in 1964, and both Browne and Langella were in the original cast.

Call (212) 996-1100 for tickets to these events. The 92nd Street Y is located at 1395 Lexington Ave., at 92nd Street.
