BUENOS AIRES -- Producers and theatres in Buenos Aries are looking toward an active, varied fall season. Some of the significant productions are as follows:
The most awaited presentation of the year is Disney's Beauty and the Beast, which is scheduled to open in September in the newly-reconstructed Opera Theatre. The musical arrives directly from Mexico, where it played for more than a year and was a huge success. The producers of the show estimate that more than a million people will see the show here.
Perestroika, the second half of Tony Kushner's epic Angels in America, will open in September at the Andamio 90 Theatre, directed by Alejandra Boero, who also directed the first installment of Angels.... The members of the cast will remain the same.
Hugh Whitemore's play Breaking the Codes will open at the Maipo Theatre in December, directed by Argentine leading lady Norma Aleandro (Master Class).
The Cervantes theatre will close the year with a new production of the Tolstoy classic Anna Karenina, produced by the English company Shared Experience. Other important openings will be Chekhov's Uncle Vanya, directed by Raul Serrano in the Buenos Aires British Art Center; Peter Weiss' Marat-Sade, directed by Ruben Pires in the Observatorio Theatre; and George Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion also in the British Art Center.
