Devotchenko was 49 and was found deceased in his own home.

He was a Russian television and stage actor, having appeared in popular Russian shows such as "Bandit Petersburg" along with theatre work at the famed Moscow Art Theatre.

Politically, Devotchenko was part of the anti-Putin group called United Civil Front - known for public demonstrations. According to Variety, he also was the author of passionate Putin opposition blog posts. "An official cause of death has yet to be revealed," Variety reported, "but Devotchenko’s known position toward Putin and the circumstances under which he was found put a microscope on the case."

In fact, in 2011 Devotchenko received two state acting prizes which he then renounced in protest because they had been given under, "the hands of Putin." Devotchenko was more than vocal about his views and encouraged other Russian entertainers to renounce the Putin regime and even to boycott any "ultra-patriotic" film and TV projects or events linked to the controversial Russian president.

The case is still undergoing investigation.
