Protesters Arrested in Poland After Attempting to Block Performance Deemed "Pornographic" | Playbill

News Protesters Arrested in Poland After Attempting to Block Performance Deemed "Pornographic" The Independent reports that 12 protesters were arrested in Poland after attempting to block the entrance to a performance of Death and The Maiden, a play based on Elfriede Jelinek's novel "Princess Dramas: Death and the Maiden I-V."

The protesters objected to the show's inclusion of sexually charged scenes and porn stars. This objection comes in the midst of a cultural conflict between secular Polish society and a new, conservative pro-Catholic government.

Death and the Maiden is described as a "production on how to torture the most efficiently."

Piotr Glinski, Poland's new culture minister, called for the show to be canceled before it premiered Nov. 21. However, his opponents say that his attempt to cancel the show violates freedom of speech.

The show's website states: "The production is suitable for REALLY adult audiences only and contains sex scenes."

This production is a different work from the same-named Death and the Maiden, which was penned by Ariel Dorfman and seen on Broadway and later on film.
