News Public Theater Accepting Submissions for Fifth Cycle of Emerging Writers Group The Public Theater is now accepting submissions for the fifth cycle of its Emerging Writers Group, a two-year program nurturing up-and-coming playwrights.

First launched in 2007, the Emerging Writers Group began as a one-year cycle, which allowed playwrights the opportunity to work under the wing of the Public's staff and dramatic advisors. In November 2010, the Public announced that the group would become a two-year venture, with a new cycle of playwrights joining biennially.

The application deadline for the fifth cycle (which will run January 2014 through December 2014) is Aug. 30, 2013. Through an open submission process, ten playwrights will be selected for the fifth cycle, which is supported by Time Warner.

Each participant of the writers group receives a $6,000 stipend, and participates in biweekly writers group sessions with the Public literary manager and master classes with established playwrights. Participants also have the chance to observe rehearsals for productions at the Public.

The EMG is part of the Public Writers Initiative, a long-term program that supports and develops works by writers at every stage of their careers.
