News Public Theater's Biro to Begin April 6; Opening Is April 18 The Ugandan tale Biro will begin performances at the Public Theater's Luesther Hall on April 6, it was announced. The Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine drama, which gets its New York City debut, and will be performed by its author, will have an opening of April 18.

The show is described as "One man's story of survival across Uganda, Cuba and America....[about] Biro, a boy from a war-torn Uganda who helps liberate his country and finds himself on the front lines of a global war with AIDS."

In putting together his latest work, Mwine journeyed to his native Uganda. There, he took many photographs (he is an experienced photographer) and taped hours of recordings. Once the piece was composed, he toured the country with it, eventually playing the Ugandan National Theatre in January 2003. Later came a date at the Drill Hall in London.

As an actor, Mwine has appeared in the national tour of Six Degrees of Separation and the regional hit Nomathemba, which starred South African singing group Ladysmith Black Mambazo.

Peter Dubois directs Biro.

Lisa Kron recently returned to the Public with the world premiere of her play Well. Directed by Leigh Silverman, Well presents an "intimate portrait of family dynamics."
